Obtain the equation for lateral magnification for thin lens.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lateral magnification in terms of u and f,
The thin lens formula is
`(1)/(v) - (1)/(u) = (1)/(f)`
Multiplying on both sides by .u.
`(u)/(v)-1=(u)/(f)rArr(u)/(v)=(f+u)/(f)`
`=(v)/(u)=(f)/(fu)`
In teram of v and f, multiplying by v, we get
`1-(v)/(u)=(v)/(f)`
`(v)/(u)=1-(v)/(f)=(f-v)/(f)=m`
Hence, lateral magnification for thin lens, `m=(v)/(u)=(f)/(f+u)=(f-v)/(f)`
