What is the reason for reddish appearance of sky during sunset and sunrise?

During sunrise or sunset, the sun is near the norizon. Sunlight has to travel a greater distance. So shorter waves of blue region are scattered away by the atmosphere. Red waves of longer wavelenght are least scattered and reach the observe. So the sun appears red.
