Two bodies of masses M and m are allowed to fall from the same height . If air resistance for each body be same , will the two bodies reach the ground simultaneously ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let R be air resistance
For `1^("st")` body `"Ma"_(1)="Mg"-R`
`a_(1)=("Mg"-R)/(M)=g-(R)/(M)`
For `2^(2d)` body `"ma"_(2)="mg"-R`
`a_(2)=("mg"-R)/(m)=g-(R)/(m)`
As `M gt m`
`therefore a_(1) gt a_(2)`
Thus, heavier body will reaach ground first.

Two bodies of masses m_1 and m_2(

Assertion: Two bodies of masses M and m(M gt m) are allowed to fall from the same height if the air resistance for each be the same then both the bodies will reach the earth simultaneously. Reason: For same air resistance, acceleration of both the bodies will be same.

Assertion : Two bodies of unequal masses m_1 and m_2 are dropped from the same height. If the resistance offered by air to the motion of both bodies is the same, the bodies will reach the earth at the same time. Reason : For equal air resistance, acceleration of fall of masses m_1 and m_2 will be different.
