In the first compound,
Mass of carbon = 42.0 g
Mass of oxygen = 100-42.9 = 57.1 g
In the second compound,
Mass of carbon = 27.3 g
Mass of oxygen = 100-27.3 = 72.7 g
In the first compound.
Mass of carbon combining with 57.1 g of oxygen
= 42.9 g
Mass of carbon combining with 1.0 g of oxygen
`=(42.9)/(57.1) xx 1.0 = 0.75`g
In tbe second compound,
Mass of carbon combining wih 72.7 g of oxygen = 27.3 g
Mass of carbon combining with 1.0 g
oxygen `=(27.3)/(72.7) = 0.375`g
The ratio of mass of carbon combining with fixed mass of oxygen
0.75 : 0.375 or 2:1.
