A sugar syrup of weight 214.2 g contains...

A sugar syrup of weight `214.2 g` contains `34.2 g` of sugar `(C_(12) H_(22) O_(11))`. Calculate
a. the molal concentration.
b. the mole fraction of the sugar in the syrup.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Weight of sugar syrup = 214.1 g
Weight of sugar in syrup = 34.2 g
Weight of water in syrup = 214.2-34.2 = 180.0 g
Moles of sugar =`(34.2)/(342) = 0.1`
(Molar mass = 342)
Molality `=0.1/180 xx 1000 = 0.56`m
(ii)Moles of sugar `=(34.2)/342 =0.1`
Moles of water `=180/18=10`
Mole fraction of sugar `=(0.1)/(10+ 0.1) =0.0099`.
