A compound (molecular mass = 246) has the following data:

From the data find out
(i) atomic masses of the elements A, B,C and D,
(ii) simple ratio,
(iii) Molecular formula of the compound.

Step 1: To calculate the atomic masses:
The relative number of atoms
`=("Percentage of element")/("Atomic mass")`
Atomic mass `=("Percentage of element")/("Relative number of atoms")`
`therefore` Atomic mass of A `=(9.76)/(0.406) = 24`,
Atomic mass of B `=(13.01)/0.406 = 32`
`therefore` Atomic mass of C `=(26.01)/1.625 = 16`,
Atomic mass of D `=(51.22)/(2.846) = 18`
Step II: To calculate the simple ratio of atoms.

Hence, the empirical formula =`ABC_(4)D_(7)`
Step III. Calculation of molecular formula Empirical formula mass = `24 + 32 + 4 xx 16 + 7 xx 18 = 246`
`n=("Molecular mass")/("Empirical formula mass") = 246/246 =1`
Molecular formula of compound `=(ABC_(4)D_(7))_(1) = ABC_(4)D_(7)`
