Predict in which of the following entrop...

Predict in which of the following entropy increases/decreases :
(a) `H_(2)(g) to 2H(g)`
(b) `2NaHCO_(3) to Na_(2)CO_(3) (s) + CO_(2) (g) + H_(2)O(g)`
(c) A liquid crystallizes into a solid.
(d) Temperature of a crystalline solid is raised from 0 K to 115 K.

(a) One molecule of `H_(2)` gives two atoms. Therefore, the number of particles increases leading to more disordered state. Thus, entropy increases.
(b) Reactant `NaHCO_(3)` is a solid and it changes to one solid and two gases. Therefore, products have higher entropy and hence entropy increases.
(c)After crystallisation, solid has more orderded state and less entropy.Hence entropy decreases.
(d) At 0 K, the crystalline solid has most ordered state. When temperature increases to 115 K, molecules begin to move and ordered arrangement decreases. Therefore, entropy increases.
