What causes the temporary and permanent hardness of water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The temporary hardness is due to the presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium i.e., `Ca(HCO_3)_2` and `Mg (HCO_3)_2` in water. On the other hand, permanent hardness is caused by the presence of chlorides and sulphates of calcium and magnesium i.e., `CaCl_2, CaSO_4, MgCl_2 MgSO_4` in water.
