Cosider the reactions
(i) `H_(2)O_(2) + 2HI to I_(2) + 2H_(2)O`
(ii) `HOCl + H_(2)O_(2) to H_(3)O^(+) + Cl^(-) + O_(2)`

`overset(+1)(H_2)overset(-1)(O_2) + 2overset(-1)(HI) to overset(0)I_2 + overset(+1)(2H_2)overset(-2)O`
O.N. of oxygen is decreased from `-1(H_2 O_2) ` to `-2(H_2 O)`, therefore, it is reduced and acts as an oxidising agent.
`HOCl + H_2 overset(-1)O_2 to H_3 O^(+) + Cl^(-) + overset(0)O_2`
O.N. of oxygen is increased from `-1(H_2 O_2) ` to `0(O_2)` , therefore , it is oxidised and acts as a reducing agent.
