Which of the compounds will react faster in `S_(N)1` reaction with `""^(-)OH` ion?
`CH_(3)-CH_(2)-ClorC_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)-Cl`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`C_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)-Cl`
`S_(N)1` reaction proceeds through the formation of carbocation intermediate. `C_(6)H_(5)CH_(2)Cl` readily undergoes ionization to give `C_(6)H_(5)CH_(2)` carbocation, which is stabilized by resonance.

On the other hand, `CH_(3)CH_(2)Cl` does not undergo ionization to give `CH_(3)CH_(2)` carbocation. Therefore, `C_(6)H_(5)CH_(2)CI` reacts faster than `CH_(3)CH_(2)Cl` with `OH^(-)` ion.
