Although `—NH_(2)` group is an ortho and para directing group, nitration of aniline gives along with ortho and para derivatives, meta derivative also.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Under strong acidic conditions of nitration, most of the aniline is converted into anilinium ion having `NH_(3) ""^(+)` group. This group is a m-directing group, therefore, m-nitroaniline is also obtained along with o- and p-products.
