Explain the association of carbohydrate to the plasma membrane and its significance.

Carbohydrates form about 1 - 5% of chemical composition of plasma membrane. These occur either as glycoproteins or glycolipids only on outer surface of plasma membrane. These help in cellular recognition, blood grouping and immune response.
