Cell theory was proposed by Schleiden and Schwann (1839) and states:
(i) Cells are structural units of organisms.
(ii) Each cell is a mass of protoplasm (with cytoplasm and nucleus) and is bounded by a plasma membrane.
(iii) Cells perform all the metabolic activities so are physiological units of cells.
(iv) New cells are formed de nov from abiotic materials.
