Give the biochemical composition of plasma membrane. How are liPid molecules arranged in the membrane?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Biochemical composition of plasma membrane is: Proteins = 58-59%, Lipids = 40% and Carbohydrates = 1-5%. Ratio of proteins and lipids varies in different cell types e.g. in PM of human RBC proteins and lipids occur in 52% and 40% Lipids generally occur as phospholipids which occur in bilayer arrangement. Their hydrophobic tails face each other while hydrophilic heads face in opposite directions.
