While examining the mitotic stage in a tissue, one finds some cells with 16 chromosomes and some with 32 chromosomes. What possible reasons could you assign to this difference in chromosomer number. Do you think cells with 16 chromosomes could have arisen from cells with 32 chromosomes or vice-versa ?

Text Solution

In mitosis, cells with 16 chromosomes (each being formed of 2 sister chromatids) can fom cells with 32 chromosomes at anaphase when sister chromatids separate and form daughter chromosomes. But in Telophase, out of 32 chromosomes 16 chromosomes are reassembled at each pole to form daughter cells with 16 chromosomes.
