Comment on the statement - meiosis enables the conservation of specific chromosome number of each species even through the process results in reduction of chromosome number ?

Though meiosis results in reduction of chromosome number and produces the haploid gametes from diploid germ cells of the gonads. But it is always followed by fertilization which involves fusion of haploid gametes to restoreoriginal diploid chromosome number. So meiosis and fertilization both work in coordination to conserve species specific chromosome number
