MTP, also called induced abortion, is the termination of pregnancy before the foetus becomes viable. Its aim was to get rid of unwanted pregnancy or when the pregnancy may be fatal to foetus or mother or both. It was legalised in 1971 to check the indiscriminate and illegal female foeticides in India. It is the safest before first trimester of pregnancy
