Carbon dioxide and water vapour present ...

Carbon dioxide and water vapour present in air moderates the temperature of the earth. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Air plays a very important role in keeping the temperature of the earth within a certain range. This happens as a result of a phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect. The `CO_2` and water vapour of air are transfparent to the visible radiation of the sun that warms the earth's surface during day time. The radiated IR radiation by earth is trapped by water vapour and `CO_2` which maintains be temperature even during night time. The heat is trapped which keeps the earth warm even during the night. would have been abnormallly cold and life would not have existed on earth.
