Is a solution with pH 6 acidic, basic or neutral ? Justify

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A solution with pH 6 will be acidic when the ionic product of water is `1 xx 10^(-14) mol^(2)//L^(2)`. In such a case, a solution with pH less than 7 is acidc in nature. On increasing the temperature, the ionic product of water increases due to increase in the ionisation of water. When the ionic product of water increases to `1 xx 10^(-12) mol^(2)//L^(2)`, a solution with pH 6 will be neutral and below 6 will be acidic in nature
