Why do stars twinkle?...

Why do stars twinkle?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Twinkling of the star is due to refraction of the light from stars through atmosphere. The light from stars on entering the earth.s atmosphere undergoes refraction continuously before it reaches the earth. The stars are very distant objects and may be considered as point sources. The refractive index of the air changes from time to time due to change of density of air. Due to charge of the density of earth.s atmosphere, the path of rays from stars continuously change . The apparent positions of the stars conti-nuously change due in refractive index of the atmosphere. Thus the stars appear to twinkle .
