(a) People are probably suffering from goitre.
(b) It occurs due to deficiency of iodine in the diet so leading to hypothyroidism (decreased synthesis of thyroxine).
(c) Hypothyroidism during pregnancy causes cretinism characterised by developmental defects so the baby (called cretin) suffers from stunted growth,. mental retardation so low I.Q., delayed puberty, low BMR, reduced heart beat, pulse, cardiac output and blood pressure, low body temperature, dry skin, deaf-mutism, pigeon chest etc.
