Hypothalamus is a super master endocrine gland. Elaborate.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hypothalamus is called a super master endocrine gland because it secrets a number of Releasing Factors (RF) and Inhibitory Factors (IF) which stimulate and inhibit the secretion of trophic hormone from the pituitary gland. So pituitary gland acts as primary target organ of hypothalamus. Trophic hormones of pituitary regulate the secretion of hormones from a member of other endocrine glands like thyroid, adrenal cortex, mammary glands, gonads (Testes and ovaries), etc. so pituitary gland is most important endocrine gland and is called master gland of the body. As pituitary secretion of trophic hormones is regulated by neurohormones of hypothalamus, so it is called super master endocrine gland of body .
