What are the two basic characteristics of a simple harmonic motion?

(i) A particle is said to be executing S.H.M. if its acceleration at any instant is directly proportional to its displacement from the mean position and is always directed towards mean position.
(ii) The acceleration and displacement of the particle executing S.H.M. are directed in opposite direction.
