Which of the two gases, ammonia and hydrogen chloride, will diffuse faster and by what factor?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`NH_(3)," 1.46 times"`

Rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to its molar of mass. Since molar mass of `NH_(3)` is less t han `HCl, NH_(3)` will diffuse faster.
`"Now "(r_(NH_(3)))/(r_(HCl))=sqrt((M(HCl))/(M(NH_(3))))`
`=sqrt((36.5)/(17))`
`=sqrt(2.174)=1.46`
`therefore" "NH_(3)`" will diffuse 1.46 times faster than HCl."`
