Value of universal gas constant (R) is same for all gases. What is its physical significance ?

From the gas equation,
`pV=nRT," "R=(pV)/(nT)`
If p is measured in Pascal, V in `m^(3)`, n in mol and T
in Kelvin, then units of R are
`R=("Pa m"^(3))/("mol K")="Pa m"^(3)K^(-1)"mol"^(-1)`
`or " J mol"^(-1)K^(-1)`.
Since Joule is a unit of work then R represents work done per mole per Kelvin.
