Sodium metal is kept under kerosene. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Sodium metal is very reactive . When exposed to air , it reacts with oxygen , moisture and carbon dioxide present in the air .
`4Na(s) overset(O_2) to underset("Sodium oxide")(2Na_2O)`
`2Na_2O overset(2H_2O) to underset("Sodium carbonate")(2Na_2CO_3) + 2H_2O`
Therefore , to prevent these reactions and protect the metal , sodium is kept under kerosene.
