A body when thrown upwards, changes its velocity therefore it changes its momentum. Does this violate the conservation of momentum principle ? Justify.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let the speed of projection be v & the speed of velocity of earth be V. `m vec(v)+M vec(V)=0`. (According to the conservation of momentum)
`rArr V=(m)/(M)v`
Since mass of earth (M) is very large compared to the mass of the body (m),
`V to 0`
Therefore, we can hardly feel the recoiling of earth.
`rArr` The momentum of system of earth + body remains constant. whereas momentum of either earth or body does not remains constant.
