Why benzene is reluctant to show addition reaction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to resonance benzene loses it pure double character rendering it partial single bond character to double bond and double bond character to single bond. This causes for the reluctance of `pi`-electrons to participate in additon reactions. Moreover addition reactions destroys the aromaticity of the benzene molecules.
