Why sharpened diamonds shine ?...

Why sharpened diamonds shine ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The refractive index of diamond is too high, approximately 2.42. Thus the critical angle for diamond is `C = sin^(-1)"(1)/(mu)=24.4^(@)`. Thus diamonds are sharpened in such a way that light entered in diamond undergoes multiple reflections and cannot escape out and hence shines.
