First let us apply Snell.s law at the planar surface of the rod.
`mu sin theta` = constant
`implies 1 xx sini = mu xx sin r `
`implies sin r = (sin i)/(mu) " " … (i)`
Further , for total internal reflection to take place at the curved surface we can write the following condition .
`r. gt sin^(-1) "" (1)/(mu)`
`implies " " 90^(@) - r gt sin ^(-1) ""(1)/(mu)`
`implies" " sin(90^(@)-r) gt (1)/(upsilon)`
`implies" " cos r gt (1)/(upsilon)`
Substituting from eequation (i) in above equation we get the following:
`implies " " ((sqrt(upsilon^(2)-sin^(2)i)))/(upsilon) gt (1)/(upsilon)`
`implies " "sqrt(upsilon^(2)-sin^(2)i) gt 1`
`implies " " upsilon^(2)-sin^(2)i gt 1`
`implies " " upsilon^(2) gt 1 + sin^(2) i`
`implies " " upsilon gt sqrt(1+ sin^(2)i)`
We want internal reflection to take place for all values of i. Largest possible value of `sin i =1`.
`implies " " upsilon gt sqrt(2)`
Hence, minimum refractive index of the material of the given cylinder should be `sqrt(2)`.
