A thin convex lens of focal length 25 cm...

A thin convex lens of focal length `25 cm` is cut into two pieces `0.5 cm` above the principal axis. The top part is placed at (0,0) and an object placed at `(-50 cm, 0)`. Find the coordinates of the image.

From lens formula,
`(1)/(f)=(1)/(v)-(1)/(u)`
`rArr" "(1)/(v)=(1)/(f)+(1)/(u)`
Focal length of lens remains unchanged, i.e. `f=25cm`
`"Given, "u=-50cm`
`therefore" "(1)/(v)=(1)/(25)+(-(1)/(50))=(1)/(50)`
`rArr" "v=50cm`
`"Magnification, m"=(v)/(u)=(-50)/(50)=-1`
The image is obtained at 50 cm, on right side of the lens and since it is inverted, it will be 0.5 cm below the principal axis, thus the coordinates of the image will be `(50 cm, -1cm)`.
