Give two reactions that show the acidic nature of phenol. Compare the acidity of phenol with that of ethanol.

The reactions showing acidie character of phenol are:
(i) Reaction with sodium. Phenol react with sodium to give `H_(2)` gas

Reaction with NaOH. Phenol dissolves in NaOH to give sodium phenoxide and water.

Phenol is more acidic than ethanol because of more resonance stabilised structures of phende.
