Given are cyclohexanol (I), acetic acid ...

Given are cyclohexanol `(I)`, acetic acid `(II),2,4,6-`trinitrophenol `(III)` and phenol `(IV)`. In these the order of decreasing acidic character will be:

A

`II gt III gt IV gt I`

B

`III gt IV gt II gt I`

C

`III gt II gt IV gt I`

D

`III gt II gt I gt IV`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Phenols and carboxylic acids are more acidic than aliphatic alcohols, therefore, cyclohexanol (1) is least acidie. Out of two phenols, III is more aicdic than IV because of the presence of three electron withdrowing `-NO_(2)` groups on the benzene ring which make O-H bond as highly polarized. Acetic acid (II) is more acidic than phenols and cyclohexanol but less acidic than trinitrophenol.
Therefore, correct order is :
`IIIgtIIgtIVgtI`.
