The `K_(alpha) and K_(beta)` values of a-amino acids are very low. Explain.

Text Solution

The `K_(a) and K_(b)` values of `alpha-` amino acids are very low because in `alpha-` amino acids, the acidic group is `-NH_(3)^(+)` and not usual `-COOH` group as in carboxylic acids and basic group is `-COO^(-)` instead of `NH_(2)` group in aliphatic amine. For example, the `K_(a) and K_(b)` values of glyccine are :
`K_(a)=1.6xx10^(-10)and K_(b)=2.4xx10^(-12)`

Amino acid glycine (NH_(2)-CH_(2)-COOH) exists as a zwitter ion in aq. Solution. The K_(a) and K_(b) values of glycine are 1.6xx10^(-10)(Pk_(a)=9.8) and 2.5xx10^(-12)(pk_(b)=11.6) respectively. The K_(a) and K_(b) values are for zwitter ion of Amino acid with following strctures [NH_(3)^(+)-CH_(2)-COO^(-)] What is the K_(b) for -NH_(2) group in glycine?

K_(alpha) and K_(beta) X-rays are emitted when there is a transition of electron between the levels

The strength of elctrolytes is expressed in terms of degree of dissociation alpha For strong electrolyte alpha is close to one and for weak electrolytes alpha is quite small. According to Ostwald Dilution Law alpha=sqrt((K)/(C)) For an acid [H^(+)] = sqrt(K_(a)C) For a base [OH^(-)] =sqrt(K_(b)C The relative strengths of acids or bases can be compared in terms of the square roots of their K_(a) " or " K_(b) values. A monoprotic acid in 0.1 M solution ionises to 0.001 % . Its ionisation constant is :

Let lambda_(alpha'), lambda_(beta),and lambda'_(alpha) denote the wavelength of the X-ray of the K_(alpha), K_(beta), and L_(alpha) lines in the characteristic X-rays for a metal. Then.

If the frequency of K_(alpha), K_(beta) and L_(alpha) , X-ray lines of a substance are v_(K_(alpha)), v_(K_(beta)) , and v_(L_(beta))

Assertion : Amino acids are called alpha -amino acids. Reason : Amino acids are organic compounds containing an amino group and an acidic group as substituents on the alpha -carbon.
