What are the major transport mechanisms for `CO_(2)`? Explain.

Text Solution

Carbon dioxide is transported both by plasma and haemoglobin of RBCs It is transport in the three way:
As carbonic acid. Abuot 7 per cent of `CO_(2)` is transpoted as carbonic acid formed by the dissolution of `CO_(2)` in water of both plasma and cytoplasm of RBCs. it is mainly formed in RBCs as it is catalysed by a Zinc-activeted enzyme carbonic anhydrase present inside the RBCs.
As bicarbonetes. abuot 70 per cent of `CO_(2)` is transported as sodium bicarbonate ions are formed by dissociation of carbonic acid inside the RBCs and most of `HCO_(3)^(-)` ionc of RBCs are exchamge with `Cl^(-)` of blood plasma , called chloride shiff or hamburger,s effect.
As carbominohaemoglobin. abuot 23 per cent pf `CO_(2)` reversibly combines with amino groups of globin part of heamoglobin of RBCs to form carbaminoheamoglobin. Ites formation is favoured by high `P_(CO_(2))` and low `O_(2)` at the level of body tissues.
