When a compass needle is pivoted so that it can rotate in vertical plane (dip needle) will it align horizontally ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Generally it will not align horizontally . The dip needle , when properly adjusted , shows an angle with the horizontal called dip .

A magnetic needle having magnetic moment 10 A m^2 and length 2.0 cm is clamped at its centre in such a way that it can rotate in the vertical east-west plane. A horizontal force towards east is applied at the north pole to keep the needle fixed at an angle of 30^0 with the vertical. Find the magnitude of the applied force. The vertical component of the earth's magnetic field is 40 muT .

A metre stick weighing 240 g is pivoted at its upper end in such a way that it can freely rotate in a vertical plane through this end figure. A particle of mass 100 g is attached to the upper end of the stick through a light sting of length 1 m. Initially the rod is kept veritcal and the string horizontal when the system is released from rest. The particle colides with the lower end of the stick and sticks there. Find the maximum angle through which the stick will rise.
