When a spring balance, showing a reading of 100 divisions at equator for a body, is taken to the poles, then find the reading shown by it
(Take `(g_(p))/(g_(E))=1.01`)

Text Solution

Let `w_(E) "and" w(p)` be the readings at equator and at poles, respectively.
`w_(E) = mg_(E), w_(p) = mg_(p) rArr (w_(E))/(w_(p))=(100)/(w_(p))=(mg_(E))/(mg_(p))`
`rArr w_(p) = 100((g_(p))/(g_(E))) = 100 xx 1.01 = 101`

The reading of a spring balance corresponds to 100 N while situated at the north pole and a body is kept on it. The weight record on the same scale if it is shifted to the equator, is (take, g = 19 " ms"^(2-) and radius of the earth, R = 6.4 xx 10^(6) m)

A body is suspended on a spring balance in a ship sailing along the equator with a speed v . Show that the scale reading will be very close to W_(0)(1 pm (2 omega v)/(g)) , where omega is the angular speed of the earth and W_(0) is the reading of spring balance when the ship is at rest. Explain the plus or minus sign [Hint : W_(0)=mg-momega^(2)R,W=mg-m((momega+v)^(2))/(R) when the ship is moving from west to east]

Figure shows a 5 kg ladder hanging from a string that is connected with a ceiling and is having a spring balance connected in between. A boy of mass 25 kg is climbing up the ladder at acceleration 1(m)/(s^2) . Assuming the spring balance and the string to be massless and the spring to show a constant reading, the reading of thespring balance is: (Take g=10(m)/(s^2) )

If the spring balance graded in gravitational units (CGS syste1n) shows 20 as the reading, then mass of the body is "________" kg.
