A ship at rest is sending ultrasonic sound waves to detect a shoal of fish. If the time gap between the signal sent from the ship and received (reflected) signal is 0.5 s, then find the distance of the shoal of fish form the ship. (Velocity of sound in water is `1400 ms^(-1)`)

Time gap between 'incident and received sound signal is (t) = 0.5 s.
Speed of sound in water, `(v) = 1400 ms^(-1)`
speed `= ("distance")/("time")`
`v = (2d)/(t)`
`d = (v xx t)/(2) = (1400 xx 0.5)/(2) = 350 m`
`therefore` The distance of shoal of fish from the ship d = 350 m.
