Which one of these is NOT true for benzene ?

A

It forms only one type of monosubstituted product.

B

There are three carbon-carbon single bonds and three carbon-carbon double bonds.

C

The heat of hydrogenation of benzene is less than the theoretical value.

D

The bond angle between the carbon-carbon bonds is `120^(@)`

The correct Answer is:
B

Resonance gives each C-C bond in benzene sone double bond character and this has been confirmed by measuring bond length between two adjacent carbon atoms in various compounds of benzene. The bond length `C-C` (`sigma` bond as in ethane) is `1.54Å` and `C=C` (souble bond as in ethene) is `1.33Å`. The carbon to carbon bond length in benzene has been found to be `1.39Å` which lies between single and double bond length values.
