In acidic medium, equivalent weight of `K_(2)Cr_(2)O_(7)` (molecular weight `= M`) is

A

M

B

M/2

C

M/3

D

M/6

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

In acidic medium, `K_2Cr_2O_7` undergo reduction as follows :
`K_2overset(+6)(Cr_2)O_7 + 14 HCl to 2KCl + 2overset(+3)(Cr)Cl_3 + 7H_2O + 3Cl_2`
Change in oxidation states = 6 - 3 = 3
`:.` Net change `=2xx3 = 6` [Two Cr atoms are involved]
`:.` Eq wt. per unit of `K_2Cr_2O_7 = M//6`
