Mechanism: (a) Somatic cells are isolated from the plants of two different but related varieties or species.
(b) Cell walls are digested to obtain isolated protoplasts.
(c) Protoplasts are stimulated to fuse and produce somatic hybrid cells.
Example: Pomato (a somatic hybrid of potato and tomato).
