How do you distinguish between humification and mineralisation?

Humification is the process by which detritus is changed into dark - coloured amorphous substance called humus which acts as a reservoir , of nutrients , while mineralisation involves the release of inorganic substances (e.g. water, `CO_2` etc.) and minerals (e.g. `Ca^(++),Mg^(++),K^(+),NH_(4)^(+)`, etc) in the soil.
