Three types of ecological pyramids are : pyramid of number , Pyramid of biomass and Pyramid of energy .
(a) Pyramid of number is the graphic representation showing the population size of organisms of different trophic levels of a food chain. It is always straight pyramid in a predatory food chain which also indicates increase in size of the organisms , but is inverted pyramid in a parasitic food chain which indicates decrease in size of organisms.
(b) Pyramid of biomass is the graphic representation of total amount of fresh or dry weight of living matter per unit area in different trophic levels of a food chain. It is strange or upnight pyramid in a terrestrial food chain while may be inverted or spindle - shaped in aquatic food chains.
(c) Pyramid of energy is the graphic representation of amount of energy per unit area of different trophic levels of a food chain . It is always straight or upnight pyramid as the amount of energy always decrease from lower to higher trophic levels of a food chain by following 10% law.
