What is leghaemoglobin ? Give its role in `N_(2)` fixation.

Leghaemoglobin is a red - coloured pigment present in the nodules of the roots of the legumes. This pigment acts as an oxygen scavenger and keeps the level of free oxygen low inside the nodules which activate the enzyme nitrogenase which reduces `N_2` ammonia .
