Adsorption is accompanied by :

A

decrease in enthalpy and increase in entropy.

B

increase in enthalpy and increase in entropy

C

decrease in enthalpy and decrease in entropy

D

increase in enthalpy and decrease in entropy

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Adsorption is an exothermic process i.e. `DeltaH` of adsorption is always negative. When a gas is adsorbed the freedom of movement of its molecules becomes v restricted i.e. `DeltaS` is negative. Hence adsorption accompanied by decrease in enthalpy as well as decrease in entropy of the system.

In the following question, A statement of Assertion (A) is followed by a statement of Reason (R). Mark the correct choice as. Assertion (A): At the equilibrium position in the process of adsorption AH = TAS. Reason (R): Adsorption is accompanied by decrease in surface energy.

Assertion: Adsorption is exothermic and spontaneous in spite of the fact that adsorption is accompanied with deccrease in entropy. Reason: The factor TDeltaS is lesser than DeltaH
