Brinjal and potato belong to the same genus Solanum, but to two different species. What defines them as separate species ?

The biological narme for brinjal is Solamum melongena and potato is Solanum tuberosum. They belong to same genus of family Solanaceae. But due to difference of certain characters like brinjal fruit is vegetable and produced above the ground and in potato, tubers (stem) are produced below the ground. They have been named with different species.
