Wood is a product of metabolism of plants with unique renewable resource and of great value. It forms the bulk of the body of tree. It is important renewable raw material.
Technically, wood is secondary xylem formed by vascular cambium during secondary growth.
Components of wood. Tracheary elements ( vessels and tracheids), fibres and axial paranchyma cells of xylem produced by fusiform initials are the main components of wood. Ray initials produce cells horizontal to the longitudinal axis of the stem rays.
Types of wood
(1) Soft wood and hard wood produced by gymnosperms and dicots respectively.
(2) Sap wood ( living) and heart wood (dead).
