Why are xylem and phloem called complex tissues?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both xylem and phloem are made up of more than one type of cells to perform one common major function, hence are called as complex tissue. Xylem is responsible for conduction of water and dissolved mineral salts and phloem mainly carried food. Both xylem and phloem are an assemblage of living and dead cells and may be primary or secondary in origin.
Xylem is made up of four types of cells i.e. (i) Tracheids (ii) Tracheae or vessels (iii) Xylem fibres (iv) Xylem parenchyma
Phloem is formed of:(i) Sieve tubes (ii) Sieve cells (iii)Companion cells (iv) Phloem parenchyma and (v) Phloem fibres.

Xylem and phloem are examples of ___ tissue.

A tissue is a group of similar cells held together by a cementing substance produced by them, for performing a specific function. There are two types of tissue in plants i.e., meristematic tissue and permanent tissue. Meristematic tissue are found in all growing parts of plants such as root and shoot tips. These are called apical meristem. The tissue occurs right from the birth of plant, are called primary meristems. Permanent tissue arise from meristematic tissue and constitute major portion of the plant body. These includes simple and complex tissues. Simple tissues are parenchyma, sclerenchyma and collenchyma, complex tissue are xylem and phloem. Parenchyma arises from
