Minerals absorbed by the roots travel up...

Minerals absorbed by the roots travel up the xylem. How do they reach the parts where they are needed most ? Do all the parts of the plant get the same amount of the minerals ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Minerals move and reach along with water, wherever they are needed.
(ii) All the parts of a plant don.t receive same amount of minerals. The movement of minerals is unidirectional. They move along with nutrients from leaves via phloem to various parts of a plant.

Answer question numbers (a) - (d) on the basis of you understading of the following paragraph and the related studied concepts : Plant transport systems will move energy stores from leaves and raw materials from roots. These two pathways are constructed as independently organised conducting tubes . One the xylem moves water and minerals obtained from the soil. The other, phloem transports products of photosynthesis from the leaves where they are synthesised to other parts of the plant. Unlike transport in xylem which can be largely explained by simple physical forces, the translocation in phloem is achieved by utilising energy. (a) Why is the need for transport system in plants ? (b) What are the components of tissues involved in transportation in plants ? (c) In what form is the photosynthetic produce transported and stored ? (d) Though transport in xylem is mainly due to physical forces, translocation in phloem uses energy. Explain .

Read the following statements (A to E) for the translocation of the mineral ions and choose the option which have all the correct statements :- A – Chief sink for the minerals are growing regions of the plant B – Before leaf fall all minerals are removed and transport to other parts of the plants. C – Analysis of the xylem exudates shows that most of the nitrogen travels as the organic form like amino acids or amides. D – Unloading of the minerals ions occurs at the fine vein ending through diffusion only. E – Some elements that are structural components like calcium are not remobilised
