Chlorophyll-'a' is primary pigment for the light reaction. What are assessory pigments ? What is their role in photosynthesis ?

Chlorophyll b, carotenes and xanthophylls are known as accessory pigments.
The role of accessory pigments:
(i) To absorb the different wavelengths of light and to shift it to chlorophyll a.
(ii) Such pigments protect chlorophyll a and other enzymes from photo-oxidation.
